Blom Mead and Cider

Designed new email capture tools through in depth user research (including surveys, interviews, and competitive analysis) with a team of three other designers to increase user retention while staying true to Blom’s identity, both visual and verbal.

This project was completed as a part of Michigan Open UX, where I worked with a small team of 4 to complete work for a local business, in our case, Blom Mead and Cider. We started the project with no knowledge about the company or it's users, but worked hard to cross the gap and create a beautiful and sustainable solution. Our goal was to gain and sustain users for Blom over a long period of time.

The Importance of User Research

The Importance of User Research

To get a full picture of our users, we completed in depth research through a variety of means.

With such a focus on how our users interacted with the Blom brand, we needed to get our hands dirty and complete as much user research as seemed possible within our short timeline.

Through competitive audits, we learned about Blom’s competition, and how they did not use the tools Blom wanted designed, namely pop-up email capture and welcome series. At first, this seemed like an opportunity to set the brand apart , but we quickly learned that pop-up email captures can easily annoy users.

Users who completed our survey and interviews often expressed these pop-ups to be the bane of their existence. This became a difficult question for us throughout the project, as we were tasked to make this historically unfriendly experience not only fit users, but draw them in.

Because of our research, we were able to make tweaks to the design to fit the consumers that Blom wanted to attract. Our main point of interest was making the experience simple, as users expressed annoyance in complex or hard to close pop ups, hence the focus on the escape routes within the wireframes below.

While I focused on the pop-up, I was also included in the research and critique of other parts of the project. We worked to complete an Embedded Form and Welcome Series template for our client, one that could be easily changed to be sustainable with time, even for someone with little experience with design. We really wanted our designs to be able to change with time, and be able to fit everything that our client might need them to.

Communication is Key

Communication is Key

With carrying out complex research and client projects, keeping everyone on task and up to date becomes more important than ever.

With a wide scope, this project asked for each member of the team to be working on a different part of the project all at once. As such, it was required to keep up with communications, not only with one another, but with our client.

College students and small business owners both have busy schedules, but we prided ourselves on our communication, and our ability to keep to the tight deadlines that were required to complete our research and designs on time.
